7-Day Budget Camping Safari: Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Manyara & Materuni

Duration 7 days
From $2,200

Not every way to see Tanzania’s finest parks requires a luxury lodge budget, and this seven-day journey proves it, the full northern circuit, camping under the stars for two of its nights, closing with a day spent among waterfalls, coffee farms and hot springs at the foot of Kilimanjaro.

You begin in Arusha, before heading into Tarangire, the country’s elephant stronghold, and on to the Serengeti’s Seronera area, where camp for the night is genuinely inside the park itself. The Ngorongoro Crater follows, a descent in search of the black rhino, among the hardest animals in Africa to spot, made easier here thanks to the crater’s open floor. Lake Manyara adds flamingo, tree-climbing lion and a close-up hippo pool encounter, before the safari closes with something different entirely, a hike to the Materuni Waterfalls, a hands-on coffee tour, and an afternoon soaking in the warm waters of Kikuletwa hot springs.

A genuinely comprehensive, budget-conscious way to experience Tanzania’s headline parks and its people, without paying for walls you’ll barely be inside anyway.

  • A campsite stay genuinely inside the Serengeti's Seronera area
  • A crater-rim campsite before an early descent in search of black rhino
  • Lake Manyara's tree-climbing lion, flamingo and hippo pool
  • A hike to Materuni Waterfalls, a coffee tour and Kikuletwa hot springs

Who will love this safari?

This itinerary suits travellers who want the complete northern circuit, all four major parks, without the cost of premium lodges throughout, and who are genuinely comfortable with camping for two nights inside the parks themselves. The Materuni and Kikuletwa finale adds real cultural depth that most standard circuits skip entirely, making this a strong fit for adventurous travellers who want their safari to include people and place, not wildlife alone.

This safari performs well across most of the year given Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara's consistent game viewing, but June to October and January to March remain the strongest windows. Worth a note for guests packing for the trip that the two camping nights, particularly Simba campsite on the crater rim, can get genuinely cold overnight regardless of season, given the altitude.

Day by Day

On arrival, you’ll be collected from the airport and taken to your hotel, with a full safari briefing to follow before you settle in for the night at a lodge in Arusha. Should your flight land early enough, an optional city tour is available, taking in some of Arusha’s best-known spots, the African Art Gallery and a Maasai market among them.
