Three days is enough to properly experience the thunder of Murchison Falls, the most powerful waterfall in the world by volume, alongside a genuine rhino tracking encounter and one of Uganda’s finest boat cruises.
The journey north from Entebbe includes a stop at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary for a short, on-foot rhino tracking experience, before continuing to Murchison Falls National Park itself, standing at the top of the falls as the Nile forces itself through a narrow gorge in a genuinely amazing spectacle. A full morning game drive the following day brings lion, buffalo, giraffe, elephant and antelope into view, before an afternoon boat cruise along the Nile, hippo, crocodile and prolific birdlife lining the banks, all the way to the base of the falls themselves, with the option of a hike back up to the top. A final morning game drive on the way out closes the safari before the drive back to Kampala.
A compact, privately guided introduction to Murchison Falls for travellers who want the falls, the wildlife and a rhino encounter, without the length of a full Uganda circuit.
This itinerary suits travellers with limited time in Uganda who still want to experience Murchison Falls properly, the game drives, the Nile boat cruise and a genuine rhino tracking stop at Ziwa, all in a compact three days. With both a budget and a mid-range accommodation option available, it works well for travellers at different comfort levels, and it's an easy, accessible introduction to Uganda's wildlife for first-time visitors.
Murchison Falls National Park is rewarding throughout the year, and the boat cruise and rhino tracking experience both operate regardless of season. June to September and December to February offer the driest conditions and the easiest road access for the long drive north, while the wetter months bring a quieter, greener alternative for travellers who don't mind occasional rain.
After breakfast, your dedicated driver briefs you on the three-day Murchison Falls safari ahead before setting off on the six-hour journey north. You’ll pass through Luweero, with a stopover at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary for a short rhino tracking experience on foot, before a lunch stop in Masindi and the final push into the park. Once inside, keep an eye out for warthog, baboon and other wildlife along the way. Standing at the top of the falls is a genuinely amazing experience, watching the Nile force itself through an 8-metre gorge; there are plenty of photo opportunities here. You’ll drive to your lodge afterwards, relax through the evening, and enjoy dinner ahead of your first night.
An early breakfast at 6:30 am precedes your game drive, starting at 7am with your driver and a ranger guide. Expect strong sightings throughout: lion, buffalo, giraffe, elephant, antelope, waterbuck and a good range of birdlife. You’ll return to the lodge around 11:40 am to relax, freshen up and have lunch, ahead of the afternoon’s Nile boat cruise. On the water, you’ll see Nile crocodile, hippo, buffalo and elephant along the banks, alongside striking birdlife, bee-eater, kingfisher and the shoebill stork among them. The cruise takes you to the base of Murchison Falls itself, for a clear and genuinely powerful view of the falls, with the option of a hike to the top afterwards, where your driver-guide will be waiting to take you back to the lodge.
After breakfast, a further morning game drive on your way out of the park brings a last chance to spot buffalo, elephant, giraffe, lion and antelope grazing across the grasslands, alongside a good range of birdlife. Leaving the park, you’ll stop in Masindi for lunch before continuing the journey, reaching Kampala in the evening and bringing the safari to a close.
