Gorilla Trekking, Lake Bunyonyi & Kibale Chimp Trekking Safari

Duration 4 days
From $1,450

Four days, two of Uganda’s defining primate encounters, and a night beside one of the country’s most beautiful lakes in between. This is a genuinely complete primate safari, gorilla and chimpanzee both, without extending into a longer general wildlife circuit.

The journey west from Kampala takes the better part of a day, a stop at the equator to stand in two hemispheres at once, before arriving at Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in the late afternoon. The gorilla trek follows the next morning, one to eight hours through dense, creeper-tangled forest before a full hour spent with a habituated gorilla family, followed by a transfer to Lake Bunyonyi, often called the Switzerland of Africa for its cool climate despite sitting near the equator, and one of the few lakes in the country considered safe for swimming. A canoe tour of the lake’s islands precedes the drive to Kibale Forest National Park, passing the legendary Rwenzori “Mountains of the Moon” en route, and a visit to the Bigodi swamp sanctuary’s rare birdlife. The safari closes with a half-day chimpanzee trek through Kibale’s forest, other primates, Grey-cheeked mangabey, red colobus and blue and red-tailed monkey among them, swinging through the canopy along the way.

A comprehensive, privately guided primate safari for travellers who want both of Uganda’s headline wildlife encounters properly done, with genuine rest and beauty built in between.

  • A full day's gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
  • A restorative night beside Lake Bunyonyi, the Switzerland of Africa
  • Rare birdlife at the Bigodi swamp eco-tourism site
  • Half-day chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest National Park

Who will love this safari?

This itinerary suits travellers who want Uganda's two signature primate experiences, gorilla and chimpanzee trekking, in a single, well-paced trip, rather than choosing one or building two separate journeys. The Lake Bunyonyi night in between offers genuine rest after the physical demands of gorilla trekking, and the Bigodi swamp walk adds real value for anyone with an interest in birdlife alongside the primates.

This itinerary benefits from a genuinely aligned low season: April, May and November bring discounts on both the gorilla and the Kibale chimpanzee permits, a combined saving of up to $250 per person compared to standard season pricing. Both treks operate in every season, so travellers focused on value should strongly consider these three months, while those prioritising the driest trail conditions may prefer June to September or December to February instead.

Day by Day

After an early breakfast, you’ll set off westward from Kampala for the roughly nine- to ten-hour journey to Bwindi. A brief stop at the equator offers the chance to stand in two hemispheres at once and take a few photographs, before the drive continues through the verdant, rolling hills characteristic of this part of the country. A lunch break in Mbarara town breaks up the journey before you continue to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, arriving in the late afternoon.
