This is northern Tanzania distilled into five unhurried days, elephant country, one of Africa’s great natural wonders, and a small park that punches remarkably far above its size.
You begin in Arusha, a gentle first night to settle in before Tarangire National Park, home to the largest concentration of elephants in northern Tanzania, its ancient baobabs and the silver thread of the Tarangire River drawing herds that move at their own considerable pace. From there, the safari descends into the Ngorongoro Crater, a nearly 600 metre deep, 20 kilometre wide caldera that functions as its own self-contained world, lion prides on the crater floor, black rhino grazing at a distance, all of the Big Five present within its walls. The journey closes at Lake Manyara, a small park with an outsized reputation for tree-climbing lions, flamingo-pink shallows and over 500 recorded bird species, before returning to Arusha for a final night.
A safari built for travellers who want northern Tanzania’s essential character without the length of a full Serengeti circuit, unhurried, well-paced, and genuinely varied from start to finish.
This itinerary suits travellers with five days to spend who want the essential northern Tanzania experience, elephants, the Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara's tree-climbing lions, without extending into a longer Serengeti circuit. It works particularly well as a standalone trip or as the safari half of a Tanzania and Zanzibar combination, and it's well suited to first-time visitors who want a well-paced introduction to the region's landscapes and wildlife.
This itinerary performs well across most of the year, since none of its three parks depend on the Serengeti's migration timing the way some northern circuit routes do. June to October brings the clearest dry season conditions, while January to March adds the bonus of calving season activity in the wider region. April and November are simply quieter, a good option for travellers who prefer fewer vehicles at the same sightings.
Your northern Tanzania safari begins the moment you land. A Safaris Without Borders driver meets you at Kilimanjaro Airport and transfers you to the comfortable Venice Hotel in Arusha, your basecamp before the wild begins. The afternoon is yours to decompress, rest, wander Arusha’s vibrant streets, or simply sit with the anticipation of what tomorrow holds. In the evening, join your safari briefing and meet the team who will guide you through the days ahead.
This is elephant country. Ancient baobab trees rise from the ochre earth, the Tarangire River winds silver through the landscape, and the herds, enormous, unhurried, magnificent, move at their own pace. Tarangire is home to the largest concentration of elephants in northern Tanzania, and game drives here rarely disappoint. Expect giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, warthog, buffalo and a rolling cast of predators, lion patrol these plains, and leopard occasionally reveal themselves to the patient observer. You’ll spend the afternoon deep in the park before settling in for the night at Jambo Lodge.
Few experiences on earth compare to descending into the Ngorongoro Crater. At nearly 600 metres deep and 20 kilometres wide, this ancient caldera is a self-contained world, a sweeping bowl of grassland, forest and soda lake, teeming with wildlife. Your day unfolds across the crater floor, where lion prides laze in the morning sun, black rhino graze in the distance, and elephant bulls move with quiet authority. The Big Five are all here. You’ll take a picnic lunch on the crater floor before ascending in the afternoon and continuing to Mto wa Mbu for the night.
Small in size, extraordinary in character, Lake Manyara National Park packs more diversity into its borders than parks many times its size. The shallow alkaline lake draws thousands of flamingo in season, staining the horizon a vivid, surreal pink. Beyond the shoreline, tree-climbing lion in the acacia woodlands, troops of baboon along the forest edge, elephant, giraffe and over 500 bird species threading through every habitat. After a picnic lunch and a final afternoon of game viewing, you return to Arusha and Venice Hotel for your last night.
After breakfast, you transfer to Kilimanjaro Airport for your onward flight, or to Arusha Airport if you’re extending your journey with a beach stay in Zanzibar. Ask us about our safari and Zanzibar combination packages.
