This is Tanzania’s classic northern circuit, three of the country’s most celebrated landscapes woven into a single four-day journey. It begins in Tarangire National Park, known above all for its large elephant herds, moving across a landscape that shifts from seasonal swamp to open savanna as the Tarangire River winds through it, lion stalking prey in the grass below, leopard draped in the branches above.
From there, the route continues to the Serengeti, home to the great migrating herds of zebra, antelope and wildebeest, and to the resident predators, leopard, cheetah and lion, that follow them. Two full days here allow the plains to properly reveal themselves before the journey turns toward Ngorongoro, the world’s largest unbroken caldera and one of Africa’s true natural wonders. An early descent into the crater floor, timed for the morning hours when wildlife is at its most active, closes out the safari in genuinely spectacular fashion before the drive back to Arusha.
A tightly built, privately guided safari that manages to hold Tanzania’s three most iconic wildlife landscapes without a single day feeling rushed.
This itinerary suits travellers who want the definitive Tanzania safari experience, Tarangire's elephants, the Serengeti's endless plains and predators, and the Ngorongoro Crater's extraordinary wildlife density, all in one continuous four-day journey. It's especially rewarding during the June to October dry season or the December to March calving season, but the Ngorongoro Crater alone makes this a strong choice at almost any time of year.
This safari performs well across most of the year thanks to Ngorongoro Crater's consistent wildlife density, but June to October and December to March are the strongest windows, covering the dry season peak and the southern Serengeti calving season respectively. April, May and November are quieter rather than genuinely poor, and can suit travellers who prefer fewer vehicles at the same sightings.
An early pick-up from your lodge starts the drive to Tarangire National Park, lunch boxes packed for a game drive once you arrive. Tarangire is best known for its large elephant herds, and the park’s varied landscape, seasonal swamp giving way to open savanna, with the Tarangire River winding through it all, makes for exceptional game viewing throughout the day. Keep an eye out for lion stalking prey across the grassland, and leopard relaxing in the trees above. Once the game drive is complete, you’ll drive back to your lodge to relax, enjoy dinner, and settle in for the night.
After breakfast, you’ll depart for Serengeti National Park, a game drive unfolding along the way with lunch taken at a suitable spot inside the park itself. The afternoon continues with further game viewing before you arrive at your Serengeti lodge for the evening. The Serengeti is best known for its great migrating herds of zebra, antelope and wildebeest, but be ready too for the resident predators, leopard, cheetah and lion, all playing their part in one of Africa’s most complete wildlife circles.
Wake early for a magical game drive across the Serengeti before departing in the afternoon for Karatu, your base for the night, close to the Ngorongoro Crater. Tomorrow’s descent into the crater floor is timed deliberately for the early morning, when wildlife across the caldera is at its most active.
ter breakfast, you’ll descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for a game drive across the world’s largest unbroken caldera, one of Africa’s genuine natural wonders. Once the game drive concludes, you’re transferred back to Arusha, where the safari comes to a close.
