Four days built entirely around a single, extraordinary hour, face to face with a mountain gorilla in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, the only forest in Africa home to both gorilla and chimpanzee, alongside five further primate species, over 200 butterfly species and 360 recorded birds.
After a first night settling in at a luxury hotel in Entebbe, the road journey southwest crosses the equator and climbs through Western Uganda’s hilly terrain to Bwindi itself, two nights on a full-board basis at Buhoma Lodge providing genuine comfort before and after the trek. The gorilla trek itself can run anywhere from two to seven hours, tracking one of nine habituated family groups deep into the forest, before a full hour spent in their company, an encounter widely described as humbling in a way few wildlife experiences can match.
A focused, privately guided gorilla trekking safari for travellers who want Uganda’s signature wildlife encounter done properly, with real comfort built in on either side of it.
This itinerary suits travellers who want the gorilla trekking experience specifically, without extending into a longer Uganda circuit, and who value real comfort at either end of the journey, a luxury hotel in Entebbe and full board at a well-regarded Bwindi lodge. It's an excellent standalone bucket-list trip or an easy add-on to a Rwanda or Tanzania itinerary, and a strong fit for first-time visitors to Uganda who want to focus entirely on the gorillas.
As with SWB's other Bwindi gorilla trekking itineraries, the best value falls in April, May and November, when the gorilla permit drops from $800 to $600 per person. Trekking conditions remain workable in every season given Bwindi's rainforest terrain, so travellers prioritising savings should consider these three months, while those wanting drier trails may prefer June to September or December to February.
Today, you’ll arrive in Entebbe from your home country. After clearing customs and immigration, your driver will be waiting at international arrivals with a welcome sign bearing your name. From there, you’ll be driven to your luxury hotel in Entebbe for a one-night stay on a bed-and-breakfast basis.
The drive takes you southwest by road, crossing the equator mark before continuing to Mbarara city for lunch, and on through the hilly terrain of Western Uganda into Bwindi. On arrival, there’s little to do but check in and relax, preparing for tomorrow’s gorilla trekking experience. Your stay at Buhoma Lodge for the next two nights is on a full-board basis.
Today is the big day. Prepare for an encounter with one of Bwindi’s gentle giants, the endangered mountain gorilla. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is the only forest in Africa home to both mountain gorillas and chimpanzees, alongside five further primate species, 113 mammal species, over 200 butterfly species, and 360 recorded bird species. The gorillas you track belong to one of nine habituated family groups able to tolerate a brief human presence each day. Tracking time can run anywhere from two to seven hours. Once located, your group is permitted a maximum of one hour in their company, a genuinely humbling, emotional experience, and a rare privilege to stand this close to Uganda’s own “gorillas in the mist.” You’ll return to the lodge in the afternoon to relax and take in the surrounding scenery.
After a relaxed breakfast, you’ll hit the road for the return journey to Entebbe, arriving in the late afternoon or evening in time for your flight, bringing this focused gorilla trekking safari to a close.
